Manga Concoction

I'm not sure if this will end up being a weekly post, but my friend, Darren, has a nice write up for some manga he has been reading recently. Currently the rating system is different from what I usually use here on this blog, but I'll let him keep it till we figure something out. (Darren: Thanks vic for giving me air time and hope you guys like the manga concoction! )

Title: Yankee-kun to Megane-chan
Alternative title: Flunk Punk Rumble
Author: Miki Yoshikawa
Artist: Miki Yoshikawa
Status: Chap 1 - 211 (Completed)

"A general formula:
Yankee = delinquent = bad student = gangster.
Megane = Spectacles = nerd = smart"

However is that really the case? The story revolve around Daichi Shinagawa(Yankee) and Hana Adachi (Megane), with its backdrop set in a typical high school. Hana is an ex-delinquent who wanted to (forcefully) help Shinagawa get rid of his yankee-ness. Although the manga was slow to pick up, it steadily revealed to us several new characters.

I myself personally find the expansion of the storyline restricted due the strict high school time schedule, and I can't say I like how it is being wrapped up. (Since there are some rumors saying that it was dropped and really the last chapter is a disappointment to the series.)

If you haven't notice, some character styles seem familiar due to the fact that these artwork are done by Miki Yoshikawa, who was an assistant of Hiro Mashima, author of Fairy Tail. Still she has a mixture of style of her own and I like the character designs personally, especially Hana (at the center) (note from vic: she looks like a female Watanuki! ^.^):
Aren't they cute ^^

A mole just below her eye, pair of sexy red spectacles and plaited hair. (Probably due to the fact that I'm a bit of a megane fan).

The paneling is easy to follow, but sometimes too much text is squeezed into one bubble.
Generally, this series is well received. I myself love it and we hope to see more work from Miki Yoshiawa.

Overall rating : 4/5 stars

Title: To-Love-Ru Darkness
Alternative title: -Trouble- Darkness
Author: Hasemi Saki
Artist: Yabuki Kentaro
Status: Chap 1-7 (Ongoing)

"Ecchi is like an drug. Healthy dosage keep readers healthy, but over-dosage kills. "

The much anticipated sequel to To-Love-Ru. No surprise that TLR has ecchi content in it. No, TLR is not The Last Remnant. It is To-Love-Ru, once a loving and kawaii with a decent dosage of ecchi injected into manga that is fun to read and never fails to make you laugh.

Now prepare for change, as TLR has transformed visually and technically into darkness. No longer the innocent and pure. It's dark, errie, bondage, hentai and sexual arousing! Ok, I know I'm exaggerating over here, but still my point is: 'too much ecchi-ness kills the manga.'

"She is just too kawaii~"

Enough said about the ecchi-ness! I give credit to the artwork, while maintaining the simplicity and continue to produce impressive _ _ _ _(those sensitive ahemm). Still pretty similar character design since TLR 1.

However, this time round the story mainly revolve around Yami, the assassin who once tried to kill Rito in the first series. Can't really judge whether if the development of storyline is good, but still at least we know the side-characters are having more airtime now. I just love Kotegawa, so pick up th series if you love Kotegawa! (For those who had read chap 4, Kotegawa has changed hasn't she? :D )

Overall rating: 3/5 stars (4.5 stars if you love Kotegawa)

Title: Ageha O Ou Monotachi
Alternative title: Those Who Chase the Butterfly
Author: YAGAMI Yu
Artist: YAGAMI Yu
Status: Chap 1-13 (Ongoing)

"If you like Lupin the 3rd, you are going to love this"

Yagami Yu brings you a butterfly living in the universe of 2039, convicted of murder. You are a ex-jail warden, pea brain, but strong, accompanied with a very sexy lady to hunt down the murderer. I was pretty disappointed when it did not turn out to be one of those "Detective Academy Q" or "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni" type stories. But, since I've already started reading it, why don't I give it a try?

Surprise! No crime solving, no wits required, just pure fun time reading, and some bra stripping (above). The idea is well developed, although the storyline is kind of shallow, but it has an healthy dosage of gags here and there. Otherwise, artwork is pretty, and the idea of bounty hunting around the entire universe is wild. So give a try, it is a refreshing one.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5 stars

p.s: Next week, I will be highlighting shoujo manga. So stay tune shoujo fans~
