Seitokai Yakuindomo (Anime) Impressions

Seitokai Yakuindomo (2010)
Format: TV Series, 13 X 22 minutes
Studio: GoHands
Potential: 2-3 stars
Summary: Probably THE comedy series this season. Funny 4-koma adaptation that doesn't go (too) over the top and doesn't have fan service. Jokes might be crude, but at least it's delivery is much better than Mitsudomoe's. Just hope the jokes don't get stale.

An ordinary highschool boy decides to attend a nearby school that has recently turned co-ed. Male-Female ratio is still very low, sort of the reverse of Maid-sama, and so he is dragged into the student council as a male representative. He soon finds out the student council president is a closet pervert.

At first look this might seem like another harem series, but it is far from it. No romantic situations seem to arise between the characters as the comedic pace of the show just keeps you laughing all the way. Jokes might seem a bit cheap at the moment, but not as low class as Mitsudomoe, so it's still bearable. The 4-koma format seems to be nicely adapted for this show, so I don't have any worries about that. The only problem is keeping the jokes fresh.

Animated by GoHands, this series looks quite OK. One of their previous work, Princess Lover, was surprisingly well animated. The horse carriage chase scene in episode 1 was bloody good, but overall their animation looked a bit off at times. They certainly have the creativity and technical know-how, but the execution of some of their visual tricks just seem a tad unprofessional to me. But why worry about animation? This is a comedy series adapted from a 4-koma comic strip. It just needs consistency and variety, so I think GoHands will pull this off nicely. Surprisingly, they did a Shaft-like ED (a good thing).

As long as there's a little variety and the jokes stay fresh, this will be one of those shows that I will be looking forward to every week.
