B Gata H Kei (Anime) Review

B Gata H Kei (2010)
Format: TV Series, 12 X 22 minutes
Studio: HAL Film Maker
Score: 2 stars
Summary: Starts off bad, but gets better progressively, this isn't your typical ecchi series. In fact, it's just one big tease. The characters are walking cliches, but the plausible character development saves this series from the dumpster.

A (virgin) girl sets off on a journey to find 100 fuck buddies. Yes, you heard that right. Right from the start, you will be ready to dismiss this series as another ridiculous ecchi series, possibly bordering on hentai. However, the existence of a normal-minded cast of side characters made me stay to find out how things will even out and "normalize". After finishing this series, I can say that, while it's craziness was not thrown out the door, the characters turned out to have quite rational behaviour. At times, it was quite frustrating to see Yamada (main character, pictured above) unable to think rationally and admit her real love for Kosuda, but thankfully in the end Love triumphs Lust.

HAL Film Maker isn't exactly know for fluid animation or quality drawings, but they do have consistency. The art was appropriate and the animation quality remained average throughout the whole series. This is not to say that it is bad in anyway; it's good but not flashy, and well-managed. Looking back at their past series though and you know they are capable of more than that. Skip Beat had a nice style to it, while Mahō Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora was certainly unique. I guess it all boils down to the source material and the genre. B Gata H Kei is a sex comedy adapted from a 4-koma format, which is to say the visuals here are more than sufficient for what it is.

Nothing much to say about it really. It's an average TV anime series that borders on being trash but the realistic character development towards the end earns it 2 stars from me.
